Hirsau Monastery
One of the most famous Benedictine monasteries in the 11th century: Hirsau’s spiritual and political importance in the Middle Ages was great and is reflected in its architecture. The ruins from the Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance periods, which are significant in terms of architectural history, are still worth seeing today. |

Some History
There were three monastery foundations in Hirsau. It is not clear when the first one was founded. It could have taken place around 830, when the relics of St. Aurelius arrived here from Upper Italy. They were venerated in a small monastery, which, however, did not last long. |
In the middle of the 11th century it was refounded at the papal request and filled with Benedictine monks. Over the walls of the first monastery, the second Aurelius monastery with a new church and convent buildings was built from 1059. |
